Maisons-Laffitte
The small town of Maisons grew as far back as the 8th century, surrounding a priory devoted to Saint Germain. In 1632, René Longueil commissioned the architect François Mansart to build a castle to replace the manor the family had owned since 1450 on Maisons-sur-Seine ground. The Maisons estate changed hands several times over the years and was bought by the banker and politician Jacques Laffite in the 19th century. The Laffite family lived in a castle in a large park and contributed to the development of the town by promoting horse racing events and railway construction. The town’s change in name took effect in 1882 when the railway station was named Maisons-Laffitte.
