Auteuil

Auteuil is an old French village which became part of the department of Seine after the French Revolution. The neighbouring city of Paris later annexed the town centre while the southern section merged with the town of Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1860 to form the Billancourt district, hence the town’s current official name of Boulogne-Billancourt, dating back to 1926. The original name still lives on, however, thanks to the Auteuil district, in the south of the 16th arrondissement in Paris. During the 19th century, wealthy Parisians bought country houses there, seduced by the town’s rustic charm, bordering the Bois de Boulogne, just like the Arnoux couple in Sentimental Education (L’Éducation sentimentale) by Gustave Flaubert.
